Resumo

The present study is related to stainless steel 15-5PH, which has high mechanical strength and corrosion. In this work a wear resistance study is carried out, aiming at determining the time and temperature of plasma nitriding to give a better result on the coefficient of friction of the material. For this, the scratch test was carried out with variable and constant load of nitrided samples for times of 2 and 6 hours and temperatures of 663 and 763K. The results show that increasing the treatment time and temperature the coefficient of friction decreases both in the tests for variable load and for constant load. It is concluded that the coefficient of friction is dependent on the phases present and the hardness of the layer of compounds.
