Resumo

Surface energy (? )in solids is a property that affects straight the wettability and adhesion’s behavior in materials. However, it is frequently negligence on tribological studies because of the difficulty in its characterization and, by didn’t have an understand about its correlation with tribological wear. Thus, the objective of this study was assessing the properties of hardness by nanoindentation, adhesion to substrate by Rockwell indentation method and surface energy was assessed by Owens-Wendt-Rabel-Kaelble (OWRK) method. These properties were associated to tribological contact of AlCrN and TiAlN coatings, coated on steel AISI M2, sliding against steel AISI 4340. Coefficient of friction behavior on TiAlN/AISI M2 X AISI 4340 showed larger wear losses, even though there are no significant differences on hardness and adhesion of coatings in work. In the comparison between the surface energy values of the coatings, the dispersive component of TiAlN showed higher intensity. The analysis of the polar and dispersive components of the surface energy showed influence on the interpretation of the mechanisms of wear. The work contributes to the understanding of surface phenomena in wear and tear.
