Resumo

This work aims to identify the micro structural conditions and mechanical properties of two teeth of a gear made from carbon material, SAE 1045 that showed cracks after being submitted to a heat treatment of induction tempering. This study will be performed in a comparative manner with other teeth in the same way that they did not crack under the same conditions of localized hardening treatment. Characteristics such as differences in levels of manganese sulphide inclusions between the teeth may explain the phenomenon that triggered the occurrence of the failure.
