The 300M steel is an ultra high strength steel from the SAE 4340 steel family developed by DCTA in conjunction with Brazilian companies. Highly used in the aeronautics industry, being the substitute of SAE 4140 steel for the construction of envelopes of rocket motors, due to its greater mechanical resistance, however the problems of its use are related to machinability due to the high content of silicon and in the weldability in function of high temperability. In the heat treatment it becomes necessary the use of controlled atmosphere ovens or salt baths to avoid decarburizing, which generates a high cost to the companies, since they can not be turned off. In this work a study is carried out on the heat treatment in 300M steel, comparing the performance between two distinct processes: the conventional one that consists in the accomplishment of a Normalization, Quenching, Salt Bath and Double Tempering with the laser thermal treatment, in a superficial hardening with fiber laser for 300M steel. Two experiments were carried out with different parameters for the laser process, in order to identify in which it will be possible to obtain a higher temper in the material. The comparison takes place from metallography and microhardness mechanical test for both conditions (conventional treatment and laser) in order to compare the processes with respect to the possible microstructural differences of the treated material, besides comparing the hardness values found in the treated region in both cases, in order to show which is the most feasible heat treatment process for this case.
