A new manufacturing technology that combines in itself the main features of the processes “Electro Discharge Machining” (EDM) and “Electro Chemical Machining” (ECM) was named “Electro Chemical Discharge Machining”. This modern combined machining process (hybrid), non-conventional, is currently used successfully for the production of precise microholes in electrically conductive materials. With the technology ECDM an amount of material of the workpiece can be removed electrochemically and thermally with a high removal rate by the generation of rapid electrical discharges in electrolyte solution. This article explain in details the physical principle of material removal of the ECDM process, with a special focus on the use of this technology for the fabrication of microholes in stainless steels.
